Its 460 mm heavy artillery had the largest calibre yet used aboard ship. The ship was built in 1941 at the naval shipyard at Kure and was used in the War in the Pacific. On 7th April 1945 the Yamato was sunk by US carrier-borne aircraft 300 km south of the Japanese island of Kyushu.
